Spore Theory
A novel thought about the billionaire class as biology's launch vehicle, and why degrowth never makes the agenda.
Novel thought, October 2026.
You have to imagine that these billionaires who have all the wealth and the resources, they’re actually the driving force for spreading the organic seed across the universe. Not a ruling class. A reproductive organ.
In order to do that organically, biology has to muster and gather resources. That’s what all of this is. The gathering.
And when you look at what the billionaire class is doing to humanity, it’s really just a stepping stone. A step on a staircase up towards advancing biology’s ultimate narrative, which is just to procreate and grow. Growth versus degrowth. Degrowth is never prioritized by organic matter. It can’t be. Equilibrium is ultimately achieved through checks and balances, but there’s no such thing as degrowth, which is why it’s so hard for our society to even fathom the word as something that would be beneficial to them. It’s not in the vocabulary. It’s not in the code.
Take a step back and look at planet Earth as a whole. It’s an organism. It’s not necessarily infected, but it’s got many mutualistic, parasitic, symbiotic relationships inside itself, and we’re one of them. And you can see that life itself, one of the things it’s trying to do is get off the rock. Or so to speak. To spore and spread itself all through the deep space. The mechanism is capitalism. The billionaire class builds the rocket ships, tries to get things off the planet, and the common people are the substrate. We’re a stepping stone too.
Is this conscious or subconscious? I think it’s actually a little bit of a subconscious thing more than a conscious thing. It’s not a conspiracy. It’s a compulsion. The genetic code is literally just trying to Hail Mary spore theory across the known solar system, and then inter-solar systems, and hopefully intergalactic. And it’s also a possible explanation for why the billionaire class behaves the way it does instead of turning their eye toward helping just everyday citizens and bringing up the baseline. They’re not really behaving like normal humans, the rich. But if you look at them as tissue instead of people, the behavior gets legible.
And it’s an origin story for spore theory. How life entered our solar system in the first place, carried in by comets. Water gathering and all of that. If life spreads this way, then the life that arrived here is the same movie, earlier reel. It’s a bookend explanation for why spore theory existed in the first place.
Because if there is such a vast universe, there are other instances of life. They just haven’t reached us, due to the vastness and distances of space. The distances are the check.
None of this lets anyone off the hook. That’s not the point. The point is that “why are they like this” is a less interesting question than “what is this a part of.” Because the answer includes us. We’re not the audience of the launch. We’re the launch pad.
Checks and balances. That’s the phrase I keep coming back to. Because if there’s no such thing as degrowth, then degrowth is never going to arrive as a moral awakening. It’s not going to be voted in, or preached in, or chosen by a board. It’ll arrive as a check. Scarcity. Collapse. A rock that finally runs out of room. The only question is whether we write the check ourselves, while we still have room to be deliberate about it, or whether the universe writes it for us.
Anyway. That was just a thought experiment on viewing the system currently and the way it’s behaving.
